Texas Star Thistle

I found this in the June 25th New Yorker in a little piece called the No Comment Department (from the San Francisco Chronicle): "With California Invasive Weeds Awareness Week just around the corner (July 17-23), there are two words every Californian should know: yellow star thistle."

While it's funny and newspapers are full of errata, I do see these plants in California. However, this one is in my neighbor's yard - she thinks it's kinda pretty. Just wait until she has a yard full of them. I didn't think it was possible until I saw that thistle field last week. I guess there's a reason why they call them noxious weeds. We'll probably have them next.

We've had another interesting visitor. Without thought, I took my wheel onto the deck for a little morning spinning and could have easily stepped on him. He's so cute - I'm relieved that he was spared my mindless arrangements of the space. We were quite content together, he and I.

You mean I can blame that nasty starthistle on Texans? Pah!

Nice little fellow. Odd how they pop up, eh?

The critter--is it a frowl or an og? Looks like a cross between an owl and a frog!

Another Pacific Treefrog I think (they come in a variety of colors). You are doubly blessed! I'm still waiting for my toad house to be occupied by anything but spiders.
